HAVE A GREAT NEW YEAR!

While music journalists in Germany are wondering what happened to pop music (yes, we said it years ago. In a globalized economy national pop music is becoming less relevant every year. Music , after all, is not that different to the rest of the economy.) , we continue our path into the future.

Just got back from Portugal, crazy New Years Eve rave with 2000+ kids going mental (we know this term is totally British and a taboo term in modern Indie music, that’s why it has to be used again from now on. Creds to Garagem to make it happen!). Hardcore, hardcore hardcore. Drug music, dangerous and without any context to what we used to call western pop music.

People are angry, that’s why.

Gone is the decade of whiny upper class kids who pay their way into the music scene (because nobody else can afford it any longer). People feel and know that middle and working class have been pushed down by the super rich over the past decade, and now the dream of the rising working class rock’n'roll band has been lost…maybe forever.

(Remember, mostly, these images were marketing campaigns to sell a “product” to us. “These guys are like you, now go buy it.” We were never into buying music that reminds us of our neighbors…why? Because we hate them as much as they hate us.)

Now is the time for a new underground to emerge. NOW!

We want music which is exciting, thrilling, passionate, dangerous and unpredictable. The minds of the new generation are open and ready for change. It won’t happen in one day, but the door is open and it will stay open… for a while.

Those who sit back, those who are passive and expect corporations to deliver everything to them, will be left behind.

The new listener is active, is searching the internet for new music, the new listener is questioning any written information about music (yes, you, you journalists who have become the little finger of the corporates. You lost your integrity, once lost, no way to get it back…that’s part of the game.), the new listener is making up his/her own mind, creating his/her own taste. The new listener is thinking, because knowledge and ideas are gold in this era.

The old way of capitalism has failed. Even many conservatives are waking up now. In Paris we have seen more burning cars on New Years Eve than ever before.

We don’t need guns, our weapon is the mind…and we are ready to riot at any time.

I don’t need to say that our solidarity is with those who supported, lost and loved Alexandros Grigoropoulos.
(I didn’t want to say anything right away, because too many bands try to sell something on the back of those tragedies. And I hate that. But we received so many emails asking where we stand, I wanted to get it out. This is where we stand!)

The super rich are not paying taxes, why does the police protect them? They should protect the people. Us.

In 2008 we started and finished many new things : New music, films scores and more.

In 2009 many of the projects we were working on are being released and premiered.

In a minute I’ll give you an update on shows and live events that we’ll do over the coming months, but 3 concerts need to be mentioned now:
Alec Empire is playing 3 exclusive shows in Great Britain. London , Manchester and Glasgow.

Alec and his band (yes, including Nic Endo) will play material from following albums: Generation Star Wars, The Destroyer, Miss Black America, Intelligence & Sacrifice, Futurist, Atari Teenage Riot (plus special guests!), The Golden Foretaste of Heaven and present new songs from the upcoming album to be released later this year.

As you might know, the shows are happening around Alec’s birthday (2nd of May) and the anniversary of ATR’s legendary show on May 1st 1999

This will be a huge party and ticket sales are super limited.

Sorry for swearing, but the UK has been pumping shit out into the world especially in 2008…and we are so glad this year is over. (yes you, we don’t hate you because you are worse in football, we are disappointed music fans and we hate most German music…so don’t leave us hanging here, k???)

What would you change?” Of course I never even reply to that, because I am not angry per se, actually I have moments of the Jesus Christ mood when I could just hug everybody on this planet and I imagine driving in a Porsche with Korn, those guys from around the corner here in Kreuzberg who talk the Taliban talk, Kathleen Hanna, The Cramps and Ex-chancelor Schr?der …and we are all going on holiday, singing a song in the car, and we are about to cross the border to Poland and shit….so, yes, I sometimes love this world. but if I oculd get my hands onto the education system I would get teachers to teach this album to children age 9.

Deal with your anger, it’s ok to confront your aggression, deal with it, make it your friend…do not swallow it down….don’t pretend smiling. Waiters in Berlin are not rude, they are alive because they don’t fake it.

At some point when the American hardcore scene started evolving backwards and make it a business, got t-shirt and merch “entrepreneurs” they lost it (same with Hip Hop by the way)…they lost the reason to exist in this world. That was the moment when I turned to Japanese punkrock.

Many people say those guys over there just imitate western music. Well, they don’t know what they’re talking about. These times are long gone (if they ever existed – I doubt that anyway). The bands over there are huge fans of music, they analyse it, they know how to play it, they find their own way of saying the things that need saying.

Just look at the titles here…“British Bulldog”, “Leather face”, “Never Win” and “Crazy Mom”….UK rock bands could shoot as much heroin as they want they would still not come up with song titles like these…British bands have song titles like “tape song” or “love deserter” or “Midnight surprise” – I am fucking falling asleep… the best thing about Berlin is when you are at a minimal techno club night and people joke at the bar about UK bands who talk with their high pitch Russel Brand voices how much rock’n'roll they are…it’s like their parents tought them that…or wait, they went to Paul McCartney’s music school and learnt songs from the white album….

So those Japanese bands they close themselves off the rest of the world, because they don’t care. When I am on tour I love understanding the other countries…this is the real reason why I would go out and play there. When you play music you can connect with people on a different level and you can absorb much more this way.

New century rock’n'roll has this “proud to be dumb” mentality while when I listen to Television (yes, not my generation…way before me) or Nico’s camera obscura, I feel that they were smarter than the rest of the society. they knew stuff most of us don’t or will never find out. They were looking at the goldfish instead of being the goldfish.

In 1992 Alec Empire and Carl Crack started a sound system
called Bass Terror.
About a handful of other DJs joined right away.
They promoted the first ever purist jungle and breakcore raves
outside the United Kingdom.
In Berlin squads and run down warehouses a new sound was
developed.
Journalists couldn't compare it to rave or breakbeat anylonger.
A new term was chosen:

Breakcore. 

The sound was harder, faster and way louder than its UK
prototype. 




One other significant difference: Bass Terror was highly charged
political with its Anti-Nazi and Anti-Racist slogans and artwork.
Empire and Crack saw the extreme right wing having a rising
influence on the German techno scene.
Bass Terror was formed as a movement of resistance.
One of the first tracks released was called "Hetzjagd auf Nazis!"
(German for "Hunt Down And Kill The Nazis").

Frankfurt based techno label Force Inc. Music Works started
a sublabel called Riot Beats to give this sound a new push
and platform.
A year later Alec Empire would start
Digital Hardcore Recordings (1994).

The original EP series were only released on vinyl
in the years 1992/93.
Now 15 years later, Alec Empire is about to re-release these tracks
for the first time in digital remastered format -
plus previously unreleased tracks from that era! 

Let?s just get one thing clear right now. Record reviews are a waste of time and I would never set much store by what a reviewer has to say about an album. For one thing they are either getting blow jobs from the promo people which results in them writing a glowing review of tosh like Mando Diao or else they have never been ?much of a fan of music? and only do the job for the free parties. I should know.

I have been employed doing tatty little write-ups of LPs for the last four years and while I have to confess to having unearthed a great many gems (Pop Levi?s first LP, Magic Wands, endless Kitsun? compilations, Wild Billy Childish?s Christmas songs to name but a few) all that writing record reviews really does is fill you with an overwhelming dread of hearing a new album because every room in your house is full of shit CDs.

On the other hand you can get wind of a record and know it?s going to be a stonker before you?ve even heard it and Hurricane, the new release from Grace Jones, is one such album. It is quite simply superb. Grace has always been a magnificently magnetic and unique artist ? a kind of female David Bowie?but black.

From her early disco trilogy Portfolio, Fame and Muse to the clinical hardcore of Nightclubbing to the dripping sex of Pull Up To The Bumper, covers of tracks as diverse as La Vie en Rose, Ring of Fire and Warm Leatherette, flat-top hair cuts and half-naked album covers, is she a man, is she a woman?, battering Russell Harty on UK TV, no one ever quite sure if she was a nice lady or a fucking loony tune?you either love her or hate her but the fact remains that La Jones has always done precisely want she wanted. For Christ?s sake, the woman even popped up in a James Bond movie and fucked a 100-year-old Roger Moore. This dame?s got class and it?s great to see her back with more ultra, ultra stylish music for the first time in little over nineteen years.

Unlike your average record review I?m not going to bang on about genres and individual tracks ? primarily because I can?t really be bothered ? but I will say that Williams Blood and Corporate Cannibal are fucking awesome, proof if any were needed that almost two decades since her last LP, Jones still knows what she?s doing.

If you have some cash kicking around the house and you fancy a trip to Saturn and blowing it on some new LP then you could do much, much worse than Hurricane. And if you?ve always known the name Grace Jones but never the music then this LP is actually a pretty good place to start ? it?s about as good as Jones gets (which admittedly includes pretty much all of her back catalogue anyway).

So the waxing lyrical is over, my contender for the Best Record of 2008 so far is Hurricane and if you think I?m only saying that because I?ve been promised a blow job by her promo people then think again because I?m actually pretty flexible and can do that by myself.
