Atari Teenage Riot wants YOU to be in their video for “Black Flags”

Atari Teenage Riot is pleased to release their latest video “Blood In My Eyes.” The song and it’s provocative video offer a stark look at the issue of human trafficking. Watch the video HERE (feel free to post and share). The band’s latest single is drawn from the band’s new album Is This Hyperreal? out now via Dim Mak. Produced, mixed, recorded by Alec Empire, Nic Endo and new ATR member CX Kidtronik (Saul Williams / Nine Inch Nails), Is This Hyperreal? was recorded at the Hellish Vortex Studio in Berlin. The band will also be touring Europe over the next few months.

In addition to the band’s “Blood In My Eyes” video, Atari Teenage Riot is also asking their fans to participate in the video for the band’s upcoming single “Black Flags”, which will be released on September 6th 2011.They are calling their fans and others who support song’s ideals to make a video statement in front of a black flag, or any black surface to be included in the band’s final video.“Black Flags.” Fans are also invited to incorporate “Corpsing” into their video. Drawn from an idea the band had while “planking” at a Southern European airport, “Corpsing” is the act of laying down in a public location, covered in a black flag to represent those that have died as result of corporate greed. The band invites anyone to film themselves lip-synching to the “Black Flags” lyrics in front of a black flag or corpsing and send in their video to be included in the “Black Flags” video. All entries should be submitted to blackflags@atari-teenage-riot.net. Read the band’s full concept for the video below:

“ In the past decade we have witnessed how dangerous corruption can be for ordinary citizens, from Fukushima to the financial crisis, we could even include the current phone hacking scandals in the UK in this. The list goes on. Almost weekly more shocking news is being published. Corporate greed has too often put the lives of people in danger.

Historically, the Black Flag stood for not belonging to a certain Nation State (due to the fact that no national colors were used on it). For the us, it means also that no individual can look at him/herself as superior to others just because of his/her national identity.

The mainstream media often looks at “consumers” and labels them as “apathetic.” But as the protests around the world have indicated, there is more political activism than ever before. And not only that, we see the same activism and energy at our concerts.

Cynics always find many reasons for not doing anything and being miserable. Often they say that the world is too “complex” to get involved. We believe that even though the world is complex, there are some fundamentally powerful ideas. Respect for another human being, for example, is a fundamental idea that grants great power.

If you agree to the basic principles of equality and freedom, join us and make a statement!

The visuals of Atari Teenage Riot videos have always been very important. Directors like Philipp Virus, Andrea Giacobbe, John Hillcoat, and Zan Lyons have done an excellent job in working together with the band and getting the message across to a wide audience. We want“Black Flags” to follow in those footsteps of our previous video, but with one key difference: Atari Teenage Riot wants you to be in it!

If you want to be in the video and show that you support the ideals mentioned above, please send us the following footage:

· Have a black flag in the background, or hold it while you’re lip-syncing. (The black flag motif will link all images together. If you don’t have one to hand, use a black T-shirt, pull it inside out, stick the arms into it…there you go.)

· You can choose any location for it. If you want to do it at home, great. If you know a crazy location, do it there. (In front of your school or university? At a shopping mall? With your friends at a party?)

· We will use fragments of all videos, which are sent in and ultimately add all of you to the official video.

· If you want to support the idea but want to do so anonymously, you can cover your face. No problem.

If you want to go a step further, Atari Teenage Riot want to introduce you to“Corpsing” — the silent protest for all people who have died as a result of corporate greed.

Planking has been probably the most fun trend since break dancing. When ATR waited at an airport in Southern Europe, we did quite a lot of planks in the silliest locations, until some airport authorities tried to stop us. From that, the idea of “corpsing” developed through public appearances of Anonymous and from the acts of political activists in China.

In Berlin, Alec lay down on his back, like a corpse, and put a black flag over his head/face. Apart from it being a very strong image, many people stopped and did what they are supposed to: Ask a question! To our surprise people from all kinds of backgrounds immediately understood and supported what we were talking about.

The release date of “Black Flags” is only days away from 9/11. When we realized that it has been ten years, and when we looked at how many have used deaths of real people for their own political and economic greed since then, the original idea of the song made so much more sense again.

there is not. However, the sooner you send in your video, the more people are likely to see YOU! We will keep adding more people even after the song has been released as a single.

2) Can I wear a mask?

Yes , you can. Some of you contacted us and said that they can’t reveal their identity in the video for various reasons (parents, boss, community etc.). We understand! You can wear a mask. Please do the take in front of a black flag or hold it (create a black flags easily: take a black t-shirt, stick arms to the inside).

3) I have a band. Can I wear my bands t-shirt in the video?

Kurt and Drop Bass don’t need an introduction!

Drop Bass Network was amongst the first labels worldwide to put out evil and dark electronic music back when it all started!

If you don’t know Drop Bass Network – check it out. The records stood the test of time – the copycats are still crying because they can simply not top those early hardcore vinyl records. They are vicious, nasty and a threat to the lies of Christianity.

The Drop Bass crew was first to introduce Digital Hardcore in 1996 in the Mid-West of America, when they put on Atari Teenage Riot and Alec Empire shows.
So what does the godfather of hardcore think about this weird and chaotic ‘re-igniton’ of ATR?
Has the group pussied out because they made an album for Steve Aoki’s Dim Mak Records and not the Beastie Boys’ label Grand Royal?

Kurt sent us his opinion on Atari Teenage Riot’s “Is This Hyperreal?”.

“dude…wow! you guys hit the mark. i’m not going to say it was worth the wait…because 12 years is a long fucking time! when that blood in my eyes track came out recently i wasn’t super stoked.

i was wrong to question what atr had up it’s sleeve…this album is great.

i like this evolution…or is that revolution! cool to hear a more techno based record versus drum and bass…and all those old school rave sounds. the hyperreal title track is one of the sickest tracks i have ever heard. it’s like front 242 meets pcp/mescalinum united meets tron. i think i’m going to open dj sets with that one for a while. please say that’s a real 303 in there.

it’s cool to hear you speaking german on a record again too…adds to the intensity. and for what it’s worth one of the coolest things in rock and roll is you guys are always screaming “atari teenage riot” in your tracks….don’t even stop that. can’t wait to see you guys live this year. rave on!”

‘Blood In My Eyes’ features Nic Endo on lead vocal. She speaks out for the multitude of women who have become the victims of human trafficking, their sexuality exploited for financial gain right under the gaze of the ineffectual governments of the self-proclaimed civilised west. Nic, wholly in tune with her trademark Japanese face-paint depicting “Resistance,” makes her point in the inimitable Atari way.

‘Blood In My Eyes’ is a riveting electronic punk rock diatribe, paying homage to the feminine retributive subtexts espoused by cult films like ‘Kill Bill’

and heavily censored French art-house offering, ‘Baise-Moi.’

Nic expounds a cautionary tale, alerting us that all who stand by and do nothing share the guilt.

With its straight-forward throbbing 909 drum machine patterns, massive guitar riffs, ear-splitting adrenaline rushes of noise and powerful female vocals, ‘Blood In My Eyes’ charges down an unswerving path determined to confront the future head on.

“Blood In My Eyes” Background:

Human trafficking is a lucrative industry. It is now the fastest growing criminal industry in the world. Globally, it is tied with the illegal arms trade, as the second largest criminal activity, following the drug trade.  Human trafficking usually affects women and children. 

The International Labour Organisation estimates that at least 2.4 million people are trafficked for the purpose of forced labour around the world, nearly half, or 43 per cent, specifically for sexual exploitation, 32 per cent for labour exploitation and 25 per cent for a mixture of both. Half the victims of trafficking are under 18.

Profits generated from the world’s 1.1m persons trafficked into forced labour are estimated by the ILO at US$3.8bn. The profits are by far the highest in industrialised countries (US$2.2bn altogether). In the other regions, profits vary between US$40m in Sub-Saharan Africa and US$776m in Latin America.

The Council of Europe states: “People trafficking has reached epidemic proportions over the past decade, with a global annual market of about $42.5 billion.”

Some might argue about the exact numbers of the statistics, but nobody can deny that this is one of the major problems of our time.

Human trafficking is an issue most musicians would rather leave untouched. In popular music it’s considered cool to present yourself with the accoutrements of modern life like expensive cars, bling, champagne etc. Basically everything that makes people feel envy and adulation towards the artists who try to portray an image of being ‘successful’, while the music industry is close to collapse – but that’s another song on to be addressed on ATR’s new album.

The invisible message is:  “Don’t think – Consume!”

We find this more and more sickening while the facts about human trafficking are out there. Of course it is a complex issue and ATR is far from preaching conservative morals.

ATR played big stages at major festivals last year, from Reading to Summersonic, their surprise show at Germany’s Fusion Festival outside of Berlin in front of 20,000 people caused a mass stage invasion.
They are announcing more headline slots for this summer:  from Melt! Festival to Fuji Rock in Japan, probably their biggest show to date.

What always worked to the group’s advantage was the fact that they can easily bring a medium size rock club to boil over, while they can also make the crowds move in a dance / electronic environment (ATR originated in the traditional rave underground scene).
But their real strength is the rock arena:  Put them in front of Rage Against The Machine; they deliver a show that people still talk about 10 years later.
Put them in front of Placebo at biggest European festival, Exit, in 2010 and they deliver a sensational show no other electronic band can pull off right now.

As the title suggests, Motor’s new album?‘HYPER MACHINE’ is abrasive metallic music, combining tough techno beats and raw rock riffs, underscored by “relentless mechanical grooves that spit blood” (as Bryan Black puts it.)

All ten new album tracks retain Motor’s trademark industrial/ rock elements previously showcased on albums Klunk and Unhuman, though this time round the emphasis is firmly on the dance-floor.

“We wanted it to carry on the spirit of those first two records, but at the same time we had to break new ground and we knew after producing just a few rough demos that the new record was going to be seriously raw and off the wall,” says Bryan, “We wanted to get back into the clubs with a fresh sound.”
