So, after four months of virtually non-stop global touring, this decade’s surprise reunion success story wrapped up at the weekend as the all-new Atari Teenage Riot closed 2011 with one final gig and festive party at Hamburg’s Gruenspan.

Now bizarrely, the idea of ATR throwing a Christmas party was met with about the same level of criticism among online fandom as if Alec’s suggestion had been; „So the plan is to charge 80 bucks a ticket, play only two songs really badly and then go and push some orphan children into traffic.“ Clearly for some it’s impossible to have an opinion and celebrate Christmas and while many may have a glamourous idea in their heads that ATR spend the holidays smashing up toy stores and making kids cry, I suspect they do as we all do; lie around on the couch in pajamas watching dreadful TV and chain-eat chocolate.

Anyway, I thought it was a great idea and so I jumped at the chance to tag along and man the merch table for a couple of days.

I like doing merch primarily because you are in the position to be able to see and talk to virtually everyone who comes to the gig and watching the never-ending stream of motley characters arrive for the show is entertainment enough in itself before ATR even play a note.

It’s really fascinating what a diverse crowd the new ATR manages to draw. Sure, there are the hardcore fans who were scrawny teens jumping around and kicking fuck out of each other way back in 95 but you’ll also see cute goth chicks, anaemic boys with indie hair, guys in slick suits and even the occasional bearded hump-back mutant thrown in for good measure.

The festive bonanza started in Copenhagen where just about every ATR fan in Denmark was present. The show was great but this was probably the coldest club on the earth and my genitals had all but vanished before the promoter took pity on me and issued me with a chunky Scandinavian security jacket which was heavier than me to keep me warm (*Note: next time, steal the jacket).

It was in Copenhagen that one of fans asked the question which is rapdily passing into tour legend: “Are you always a Travelling Merchant?“ For a moment I had visions of myself wandering the deserts of the Middle East selling exotic fabrics and curious incense rather than just some freezing loser with a bunch of T-Shirts.

After Copenhagen we piled into the bus and set sail (Ahoy!) for Hamburg with CX educating me about the advantages of having a home popcorn maker (I guess he’ll be using the good ol’ Whirley-Pop to cook up Christmas lunch). After a couple of abortive attempts at listening to a podcast – the best we could do was some guy who sounded about as interesting as a fridge analysing the social effects of the i-Pod shuffle function – we settled for a disco playlist.

Before I go any further, fuck off with your snorting and sneering at disco, right? It’s probably been the most consistently excellent genre of music ever created and has been more influential to both mainstream and alternative forms of music since the 70s and any song that can make a lyric out of “Halston, Gucci, Fiorucci“ should get some sort of honour from the United Nations. Probably. And anyway we were on the way to a Christmas party. What were we supposed to do? Listen to Norwegian Death Metal and kick each other in the face?

Hamburg’s Gruenspan, a stone’s throw from the famous Reeperbahn and right next door to legendary club The Indra, is a fantastic venue. Apparently the first disco in Germany, it has a huge concert hall complete with roman pillars, upper gallery and a massive Buddha set into an alcove above the stage. It’s large and glamourous but with shabby, faded edges which dreary interior designers would no doubt helpfully label “character.“

Doors were at 10pm and no sooner did they open than a healthy supply of clubbers started to pile in. These were largely semi-drunken, rowdy party types who caused a rush at the merch table and so I thought to myself, “Yes, this is going to be good.“

But contrary to expectations it all fell a bit flat thanks to some rather silly internal office politics at the venue which I still don’t quite get to this day. Before I knew where I was, I heard Nic announce the start of the show without my ever having heard a note of the support show, Rowdy Superstar, who’d been flown in from London.

“Oh well,“ I thought, “I mustn’t have been listening properly.“

ATR were firing on all cylinders for their last gig of the year and the crowd in the sold-out venue were jumping around and generally making nuisances of themselves for the duration. They clicked into the rebellious nature of the music and at one point a spontaneous chant of “All Hamburg hates the police“ thundered through the Gruenspan which did rather make me wonder who on earth they’re going to call when crack addicts burgle their houses and steal all the Christmas presents.

So ATR finished, three quarters of the “party“ people promptly disappeared and THEN the support played for about 50 people. Yeah, yeah, don’t ask…only God knows why the main act warm up the crowd for the support. I’ll understand Steven Hawking’s Expanding Universe Theory before I figure that one out.

So that was that; a great show for a packed house, an unfortunate support band who play to a handful of people and a Christmas party that didn’t happen. The sense of despair and dejection I felt after packing up was quite handily visually summed up for me by the sight of some lonely, lumpen girl who look like she’d just wandered in from the Blair Witch Project stood in the corner next to the stage sadly picking her nose.

On the basis of the available evidence I can only surmise that Hamburgers are great at concerts and utterly rubbish at parties.

Perhaps we should’ve kicked kids in front of cars after all…

“Like music, parfum is invisible and reaches us very deeply. It is powerful.

it triggers memories that we thought were lost forever, or it produces phantasies, ideas, creativity that we didn’t know we had.

When Illamasqua asked me to participate in the project, I immediately felt excited about it. A few hours later I was taking a flight from Tokyo to Berlin and walked quickly through the crowded duty free area at the airport. Famous brand names were screaming at me aggressively, parfum packaged and presented next to chocolate bars and whiskey bottles. I was a bit jetlagged but still awake from last night’s amazing concert. This was not a ‘job’, this was an adventure that I would remember for the rest of my life.

I noticed a family on vacation shopping, both parents were carrying plastic bags, filled with boring stuff, their son was wearing headphones playing some video game on his handheld device, didn’t seem to care about anything… and their daughter was standing a bit apart, distanced, she looked almost a bit embarassed to be there. I remembered going through this phase at that age. This is when you decide where you want to be later in life. This is when you want to get away and discover the world and your potential.

Suddenly I caught her looking at me, curious, smiling then quickly looking the other way because I noticed ….it was only a short moment, not even seconds. But I thought, wouldn’t the concept of Illamasqua’s ‘Freak’ exactly appeal to her?

Isn’t it all about who we want to be in the future? And what we do about becoming that person? Expressing ourselves is always the next step towards it.

And as an artist I know that I have the desire to always evolve further. To transform.

Many people put parfums on to ‘fit in’. Sometimes that can make sense, but isn’t it about getting noticed, isn’t it about standing out from the rest?

Aren’t those who use the term ‘freak’ in a negative way, when they point fingers at exceptional people, exactly those kinds who are just jealous of the attention the ‘freak’ draws? Don’t they find themselves copying the style of the ‘freak’ shortly after? We see it in fashion, music, science, art and make-up all the time.

I can put on any types of clothes, but the right parfum for the occasion is what stays with me, what I can sense even in the dark.  It’s so close.

I was getting ready to perform at the show the night before, the finishing touch was the parfum. My stage clothes, my make up, everything was perfect, but putting on parfum is always like when a painter signs his latest piece.

It was only minutes to show time and I could hear thousands of fans shouting my name. How I feel in that moment when I perform is what makes my performance special.

I might have sung the songs many times before, but the magic happens when I connect with the audience in that moment in time.

A few weeks later I flew into London for the photoshoot, which was a really exciting experience. I have never modelled before and as an artist I usually control my own image very carefully; the videos, the stage appearance, the photos for artwork and the media… but with Alex Box and Illamasqua I just felt it was the right thing to let go and follow their vision. I absolutely fell in love with the result!

The release of the annual “Recording Industry in Numbers” by the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) revealed that Germany ranks ahead of the UK in physical music sales.

Low digital penetration, a healthy CD market and a stable economy have all helped push Germany to number three on the IFPI league table. Sitting just behind the United States and Japan, it’s one of the world’s largest music markets - as well as the biggest in Europe – and beats the UK in physical sales for the first time in more than a decade.

The UK’s recent slip down the rankings has been attributed to an increasingly strong network of digital download platforms as well as the recent disappearance of high street heavyweights such as Woolworths and Zavvi, victims of the global credit crunch. All this has resulted in a dwindling interest in physical products. CD sales in the UK for 2010 totaled $1.38 billion, a staggering 11 per cent drop compared with 2009.

In contrast, physical music sales in Germany accounted for a whopping 81 per cent of all recorded music purchased, buying the market with a healthy $1.14 billion.

The news is welcome but scarcely unexpected, especially for those working in the independent sector. German indies commanded an impressive 26.7 per cent of the physical album sales market in 2010.

“I’m not entirely surprised,” Christof Ellinghaus, chief of Berlin-based indie label City Slang, told Deutsche Welle, “One strategy that people have been following in the UK much more aggressively than over here is to lower the prices of CDs to keep physical retail attractive. Unfortunately the outcome is the complete opposite, and retail has never been in a more dramatic state in the UK.”

British music executive Grant Box, co-manager of independent label Snowhite, has had experience of the music business both in his native England and in Berlin where the label he co-runs is based.

“With Germany being populated by 20 million more people than the UK, it’s a surprise that there were ever more sales in the UK than in Germany,” he said, “The UK is a trend-setter and more and more people in the UK are downloading music from iTunes and other platforms which will happen here but slightly later in the same scale.”

While physical sales in both countries continue to fall as digitally-generated revenue cuts into more traditional sales markets, both countries have quite different consumer landscapes.

While iTunes is the dominant platform for digital music in both territories, subscription numbers are higher in the UK. In Germany the shift from traditional buying to digital has been much slower. Ongoing negotiations between subscription services and the German authors’ collection agency GEMA has been cited as one reason the growth of the digital market has been sluggish. A recent revival of interest in domestic music has also helped keep the physical sales market healthy.

Germany seems unusually hesitant to embrace digital music buying. The current market is valued at only 13 per cent in value terms. With emphasis increasingly shifting to digital platforms, the UK’s infrastructure is already better suited to ride the change while traditional, cautious Germany may well soon lag behind again.

Music producer and label chief Mark Reeder has been active in the German music business since re-locating to Berlin in 1978. Having cut his teeth working in the flagship Virgin Records store in Manchester, he could immediately see a difference in the way music was sold in the UK and in Germany.

“Our shop would be crammed and we had the latest music blaring out, at that time mostly punk rock,” he explained, “It created an energy and raised adrenaline levels and it certainly influenced our sales. When I moved to Berlin, I discovered the Germans sold their records in a much different way. In the main, the shops would be neat, some almost clinical with cold racks of records crammed together. In our shop the music was loud but in German record shops the music just doodled somewhere quietly in the background and some shops didn’t even play music at all!”
But why are Germans seemingly so hesitant to make the switch to digital? Mark thinks the explanation may lie in the age of the people predominantly buying CDs.

“On the whole, Germans are usually very loyal when it comes to buying records by their favorite artists,” he said, “Usually they will buy every release regardless of it being good or bad. Germans obviously like something physical to have, hold and own. A CD is still something of value. But I think in Germany, like in the UK, young people are much more likely to download a track rather than buy it.”

While Germany can celebrate this leap ahead over the UK at the moment, its long-term position may not be so secure. The Mercury label – one of the world’s largest imprints and home to artists such as Elton John, Justin Bieber and The Killers – recently announced it would cease production of CD singles, a further sign that the market is increasingly turning its back on physical products and looking towards a digital future.

So what is the future of the physical format in Germany? It won’t necessarily disappear, but will possibly become more of a niche commodity.

“We’ll continue to do both (digital and physical releases),” explained Desi Vach, co-manager of Snowhite, “The customer should have the choice whether they want a digital track or something they can hold in their hands. We’ll still release on CD and of course on vinyl with really lavish packaging. That’s our point of service as a label.”

City Slang’s Christof Ellinghaus points out that his label will also continue to produce luxury line releases for hardcore fans who want a physical product and that with digital sales there comes a disadvantage: “It’s really a track-based business which is a shame as many of our artists like to think of their work in the context of an album,” he said, “But we do love the way you can link from just anywhere to a point of sale, be it from Youtube or Facebook. The direct link to a Spotify or iTunes or any other outlet really is it. It doesn’t make things much easier, does it?”

About 15 hours ago or so I was listening to Obama’s voice over the internet…online radio…

I was doing something else, nothing important really… I had returned from Japan a few days before, but somehow this time jetlag had hit me pretty hard despite having played such energetic shows over there…

Sometimes in the past I felt nothing, but this time it was like that scene in Fight Club in which Edward Norton lays on the couch with his remote control, flicking through TV channels, suffering from insomnia. The only difference was that I had got rid of my TVset almost 10 years ago. I had three totally different books in front of me, couldn’t focus at all.

But when Obama came on, I suddenly felt a shot of adrenaline, I woke up. He was talking about how “Standard & Poor’s doubted our political system’s ability to act” – the US had been downgraded to an AA+ level. The debt level was increased, the problems far from solved. The information wasn’t what alerted me, it was the tone of his voice.

When Obama got elected, he convinced a whole generation just by speaking to them in a certain way, that democracy and capitalism will work out for everybody. We CAN change and improve things. Even though I come from a very different political standpoint and I am very aware of the power of the system, when it comes to the system changing individuals who tried to change it, I heard an honesty in this man’s voice which was rare amongst politicians. But suddenly what seemed to have changed mostly for me was his voice. It was the voice of a man who failed badly but out of respect for his listeners was performing a duty.  The job of being President.

We live in a society which has no place for optimism anymore. It’s gone. Nobody wants to take the risk and predict a future,  mainly because everybody feels powerless. Nobody even wants to take the responsibility and take matters into their own hands.

It’s stagnant. Establishments are regarded as fools. It is a constant battle between the ‘wisdom of the crowd’ and the ‘mob mentality’.

So while I was starting to feel like I was actually back in Berlin and awake, I looked outside the window, down on the street in which Atari Teenage Riot had played the peace demonstration on May 1st 1999. Thousands of people protested against Germany’s first involvement in an attack war since World War II. I remembered when I was on the microphone during a song and saw how the police beat into the, at that point, peaceful crowd. Of course the situation escalated, it’s all on film. Even though the images have become iconic and still give viewers the chills, but in my opinon they also tell a story of failure…

There is a long tradition in Berlin that the labor day, the 1st May ends in violence. In 1999 it was supposed to be different. The intent was to get across how serious people treat this issue of Germany sending their soldiers to war. The police failed, because they didn’t break up the crowd and things got out of hand. We all failed to get the real message across. The media had their images of violence, and basically a decade later, it seems perfectly ‘normal’ for German politicians to send troops into other countries.

Violence is always the result of people failing. Failing to communicate, failing to take responsibilities, failing to solve problems. Always.

Now the street in Berlin, Kreuzberg looks peaceful and quiet. Like it did a day before May 1st 1999 and the day after.

I turned back to my computer. The different news feeds were sending update after update. “Freddie Mac reports 2nd quarter loss, asks for $1.5B in federal aid”, “Bank of America now down -20.31%”, “Asia stocks fall after U.S. #stocks dive”, “Losses accelerating at Australian stock market; S&P/ASX200 index off 5%”

At the exact same time, more reports about looting in London, riots, clashes with police.

When European politicians discussed the crisis in Europe over the past weeks, you couldn’t help but get the impression that ‘the markets’ were some sort of wild untamable beast for them. One wrong word and bang, the swarm moving into another direction could destroy you. It makes people manipulate facts, makes people hide problems instead of solving them.

In situations of great stress and pressure most people just react to fear. When we want to understand the reasons for violence, we must look at fear first.

Once the snowball starts rolling, the destructive dynamic of it all can become so big, it takes a long time to heal and to repair the damage.

Vocalist Carl Crack sang in the Atari Teenage Riot song from 1993, an adaption of Sham 69′s ‘If the kids are united’ that

“the violence is a disease – it will become parts of our lives and our future if we don’t DO something against it! If we put our energies together it can be a very powerful era!”

The song was a reaction to the racist attacks by Neo-Nazis in reunified Germany which made most people call for more police, more laws, harder punishment. Carl was basically saying that we must act without waiting for the help of big brother government.

The link between Neo-Nazi ideology spreading and receiving more support and conservative right wing politics of the German government were clearly visible at the time.

There is a  connection between mob, political leaders and those who do nothing and watch in apathy…

How often did we think about that in Germany since we were children? I can’t count it… How did Facism happen? How could people let it happen half a century ago? So when you constantly deal with the consequences of that history, you will always reach the point where you must think about the dangers and dynamics of the ‘mob mentality’.

It spreads like a virus, but make no mistake. When riots and violence occur they are always the result of those in power failing.

When a corrupt system falls apart, it never happens in a ‘controlled’ and ‘thoughtful’ way (apart from maybe GDR in 1989 which is almost a miracle in history). Real riots are not lead by intellectuals who read Marx, so don’t expect it.

But also don’t step into the mainstream media mouse trap:

The August riots in London have nothing to do with ‘anarchy’, they are the fruits of capitalism and the consequences of government decisions.

If you think ‘mindless thugs’ have ‘nothing to do with society’ and your part in it, you might be part of the problem.

To make it clear: I don’t justify or judge anything. I am saying there will be more because the system doesn’t work anymore.

I don’t think in terms of morals, wrong and right. So when this stuff happens, it is EVERYBODY’s fault. mine, yours, theirs.

It is frustrating how some people let politicians & bankers set fire to whole countries’ economies and their future but now are in shock of the results.  People who commented were speaking as if a natural, unexpected disaster came over them, one that they didn’t have any control over or could have not prevented.

I know everybody got used to torture & war during the Bush years. But here is a  reminder: Violence is ALWAYS a failure and a sign of when things go very wrong.

Reading opinions of other music fans from the UK I realized during that quiet night in Berlin, that people repeated commentaries of mainstream media, but disguised them as their own opinions.

The reporters kept repeating the same words over and over again: Mindless violence.

You got the impression that either this was decided before they arrived at the scenery or they kept copying and pasting from each other.

What struck me is how they made “mindless violence” sound like a crime in such a way that you ended up suggesting that “thoughtful violence” is justified in our society.

I lean back and read Wikileaks Twitter “The BBC can interview the Taliban, but is apparently incapable of a single meaningful interview with a London protester. “protesters” or “rioters”, there are no interviews, but endless pathetic commentary.”

It makes me think… Why do people divide between rioters and protestors? Aren’t those as ‘guilty’ who stood by and watched how a whole generation of young people were put into a corner where there is absolutely no way forward anymore? Morally is there a difference between a corporation which pays workers overseas pretty much nothing for manufacturing trainers and teenagers who steal them?

Who is attacking your property more? The looters who throw a brick into your window or the government who lends so much money that your children won’t be able to pay off the debts?

I keep reading….

Oh yes, the first voices as expected, demanding more police & higher budgets for police …while cuts in education were totally ok just a few months ago.

Having more police on the street can only be a reaction to violence, while EDUCATION PREVENTS violence. (As logically as it sounds to us, it is a threat to some in power because then the whole passive consumer business model doesn’t work anymore)

All these things are connected.

There’s a unified axis of government and corporate power, lawless and unrestrained. That’s what we should talk about. Corporations exploit the power of the state to further enhance their power and the real criminals get away. There’s a class war going on… And it’s the rich who are waging it.

Our society has a huge problem to solve. Let’s identify it properly and understand it so we can start acting because “praying for london” won’t do it….

It hasn’t been all that long since cassettes lined car dashboards everywhere, but a wealth of new digital formats quickly relegated the cassette to a forgotten corner of history. Can they make a retro comeback?

When it was first unveiled at the Internationale Funkausstellung (Berlin consumer electronics trade fair) in 1963, the cassette caused a sensation; it was small, lightweight and modern. A far cry from the cumbersome vinyl record, the tape would revolutionize pre-recorded music like nothing before it.

1964 saw mass production of music cassettes begin in Hamburg, and the format caught the attention of the public at large. The cassette was relatively cheap, it could be played in the car and you could make home recordings. Record labels were suddenly bombarded with demo tapes, a personalised mixtape became the Valentine’s Day gift of choice and, with the introduction of the Walkman by Sony in the early 80s, it became the first truly portable pre-recorded music format.

But by the late 90s, many record labels stopped releasing music on tape, and now the format remains a dusty - though fondly-remembered - thing of the past.

Authors Christian Vorbau and Jan Drees took on the subject in their new book “Kassettendeck - Soundtrack einer Generation” (“Tape Deck - Soundtrack of a Generation”). The book is a compilation of interviews, essays and reminiscences all devoted to the humble cassette and its impact on both the music business and daily life.

The authors recently spoke to EYHO at the book launch event in Berlin.

How would you sum up the concept of Kassettendeck?

Christian Vorbau: Kassettendeck is a hybrid book; it’s part non-fiction, part novel. Interviews are broken up with passages of prose. We did this to really reproduce people’s personal stories about tapes.

Jan Drees: We spoke to certain artists about specific topics. For example, the author Benjamin von Stuckrad-Barre spoke about the short film Kassettenmädchen (Cassette Girls) while the editor of the Süddeutsche newspaper, Andreas Bernard, explained what the relationship was between mixtapes and the 1990s. We’ve also put together suggestions for mixtapes in different genres – for example, tracklists for hip-hop fans or indie nerds.

Why did you decide to write this book?

Christian: We’re both cassette fans! We both got into music during the cassette generation, and so we decided to write a book about it. It’s not necessarily a definitive text book but rather something very personal.

Who did you speak to when compiling the book and what stories did they share?

Jan: Smudo from Die fantastischen Vier told us how he dismantled and cannibalized his father’s hi-fi equipment to make his first mini-recording studio so he could record his raps onto tape. WestBam explained how he DJed the first Love Parade in Berlin not with records but with tapes. And Ronald Galenza, who wrote about punk in East Germany, told us about the link between cassettes and political subversion in the German Democratic Republic.

Christian: Eric Pfeil who works for the FAZ newspaper told us that he has a criminal record for one crime only; stealing tapes. That was back when he had a lo-fi project but no money and had to steal cassettes to record onto. To this day he is still barred from Aldi in Bergisch-Gladbach!

Do you have a favorite story in the book?

Christian: The publisher Eric Pfeil told us about hearing the song “Creep” by Radiohead played on cassette at one of those provincial discos out in the middle of nowhere, and all the kids who were die-hard Radiohead fans swaying on the dancefloor with their eyes closed, totally dramatic, really into the music, and singing “I’m a tree” instead of “I’m a creep”!

Jan: The writer Rafael Horzon was great. We asked him if he had ever made a love mixtape for anyone he replied, “Yes, for myself!”“ He then went on to tell us that when he was a student and living in a flatshare, he had this theory that good taste didn’t exist; it was simply a case of becoming acclimatized to something. So, he wanted to test his theory, and every time some completely awful song came on the radio, he’d record it. Once the tape was full he played it over and over, and, of course, the other guys in the apartment had no choice but to listen to this. Eventually, the songs became beloved tracks.

What do you hope people who buy the book will learn?

Christian: That the cassette, in contrast to other audio formats, has a soul.

Jan: We went through and listened again to all our old tapes from back then. It’s amazing to hear how much happiness and how much sadness is contained in those little squares of plastic. I think this contrast between the party of yesterday and the party of now is something we want people to appreciate.

What are your earliest memories of cassettes?

Jan: With my kind of toy cassette player, I used to record the bedtime stories my father told me and keep an archive of them. I made my first proper mixtape when I was 9, I recall.

What do you like so much about cassettes? After all, cassettes always used to snap or get mangled up in the machine, and mp3s don’t do that!

Jan: Yes, but mp3s sound rubbish. A really good cassette from the 1980s will even sound better than an mp3 from today. And mp3s sometimes have a habit of just deleting themselves. CDs also can be unpredictable like that. WestBam told us that he DJd at a Christmas party in Munster not so long ago, and he and a friend ended up listening to all his old mixtapes again and re-living the old days. He said, “After 30 years you can’t necessarily listen to a CD again quite so easily. But the cassette stays.” It’s somehow reassuring, isn’t it? I love it.

Christian: I like the fact you can’t skip tracks and therefore with something like a mixtape which you have to listen to, you can tell a story.

It’s not really all that long ago that cassettes disappeared; why do you think they are retro-cool already?

Jan: On the Kassettendeck blog you can find many examples about the retro-cool aspect of the cassette. If you look around, cassettes are everywhere: in fashion, on flyers and stickers, in magazines, on posters. We see the image of the tape everyday, and it’s one which triggers certain memories and emotions, all of which are totally positive. It’s just cool. Still.

Do you think the cassettes will ever really go away or are they going to be part of music for ever?

Christian: I don’t think tapes will play a role as a recording format ever again, but as a cultural icon, they’re immortal.

Jan: Just look at modern music today. “Record Collection” by Mark Ronson, “Mixtape” from Run DMC or even “My Cassette Player” by Lena Meyer-Landrut. These names prove that even 30 years after the beginning of the CD age, the tape still plays a role in music, and I think it always will.

We’ve mentioned mixtapes quite a lot here. If you were to put together the ideal mixtape for a loved one, what would be on it?

Christian: To name a few, I’d say “Brand New Carpet” by Bodi Bill, “The Look” by Metronomy, “Radar Detector” by Darwin Deez, “Trouble” by Ja! Panik and the Black Van remix of “Without Lies” from Aeroplane.

Jan : On the last mixtape I made were “Stop! In the Name of Love” by The Supremes, “Mindestens in 1000 Jahren” by Frittenbude, “I Follow Rivers” from Lykke Li and the Keljet Remix of Adele’s “Rolling in the Deep.” Among others!

Atari Teenage Riot wants YOU to be in their video for “Black Flags”

Atari Teenage Riot is pleased to release their latest video “Blood In My Eyes.” The song and it’s provocative video offer a stark look at the issue of human trafficking. Watch the video HERE (feel free to post and share). The band’s latest single is drawn from the band’s new album Is This Hyperreal? out now via Dim Mak. Produced, mixed, recorded by Alec Empire, Nic Endo and new ATR member CX Kidtronik (Saul Williams / Nine Inch Nails), Is This Hyperreal? was recorded at the Hellish Vortex Studio in Berlin. The band will also be touring Europe over the next few months.

In addition to the band’s “Blood In My Eyes” video, Atari Teenage Riot is also asking their fans to participate in the video for the band’s upcoming single “Black Flags”, which will be released on September 6th 2011.They are calling their fans and others who support song’s ideals to make a video statement in front of a black flag, or any black surface to be included in the band’s final video.“Black Flags.” Fans are also invited to incorporate “Corpsing” into their video. Drawn from an idea the band had while “planking” at a Southern European airport, “Corpsing” is the act of laying down in a public location, covered in a black flag to represent those that have died as result of corporate greed. The band invites anyone to film themselves lip-synching to the “Black Flags” lyrics in front of a black flag or corpsing and send in their video to be included in the “Black Flags” video. When ATR waited at an airport in Southern Europe, we did quite a lot of planks in the silliest locations, until some airport authorities tried to stop us. From that, the idea of “corpsing” developed through public appearances of Anonymous and from the acts of political activists in China.

In Berlin, Alec lay down on his back, like a corpse, and put a black flag over his head/face. Apart from it being a very strong image, many people stopped and did what they are supposed to: Ask a question! To our surprise people from all kinds of backgrounds immediately understood and supported what we were talking about.

The release date of “Black Flags” is only days away from 9/11. When we realized that it has been ten years, and when we looked at how many have used deaths of real people for their own political and economic greed since then, the original idea of the song made so much more sense again.

Austrian indie band Ja, Panik left their native Vienna two years ago and are now “stranded” in Berlin. Their fourth studio album, DMD KIU LIDT, recorded in ten days in Berlin-Neukoelln, was released on April 15.

Ja, Panik is acclaimed as one of the most engaging musical exports to come out of Austria in recent years. Some observers put the band in the “indie” pigeonhole. Others feel that fails to do justice to the German-English poetry of lead singer Andreas Spechtl, by turns heartbreaking and savage.

Spechtl is backed up by drummer Sebastian Jenata, bassist Stefan Pabst, guitarist Thomas Schleicher and pianist Christian Treppo, who complement the lyrics with music veering from raucous to sadly melodic.

While Ja, Panik tended to test the musical waters in its first three LPs, the fourth represents the peak of their talents so far. It brings together a variety of shades and styles with a solid vein of political aggression running through. The album title DMD KIU LIDT is nicknamed “DMD Cue Lit” by the band members themselves. The initials stand for “Die Manifestation des Kapitalismus in unserem Leben ist die Traurigkeit” or, translated: “The Manifestation of Capitalism in our Life is Sadness.”

Ahead of leaving on an eight-date tour of Germany, Austria and Switzerland, Ja, Panik’s lead singer spoke to EYHO about singing in English, music workshops in Cairo and just who the mysterious Mr. Jones is.

Andreas, DMD KIU LIDT is your fourth album and the second you’ve recorded since you moved to Berlin. Who did you work with on the record?

Andreas Spechtl: We worked with Moses Schneider, best known for his work with Tocotronic and Beatsteaks. We recorded it in Neukoelln in a studio called Chez Cherie. It’s actually more of a big flat than a studio. There’s a very nice atmosphere there. It’s difficult to say how long we worked on the record really. I think we worked about a year on the tracks before we went into the studio, but then we actually recorded everything in just ten days.

Once you figure out what the title of the album is, it sounds rather heavy. What is the record all about?

If you know Ja, Panik a little bit you’ll know it’s all about manifestos and very much about politics. So this album was more or less meant to be a musical manifesto. It’s also about drama, depression, anti-love songs, sadness and questions like “Where does this all come from? Is it all based in myself or perhaps is it the system that makes me feel like that?” So the album is more about questions than about answers.

You mix English and German on this album much more than you ever did on the previous three. Why?

In our early years we always wrote English songs because the language of pop is English. I think it’s interesting because it’s kind of a new language. It’s not about trying to sound like a band from New York or from London, because I really hate that. I like things like Nico or Phoenix. They sing in a strange French-English and Nico with this really hard accent. English has come to be the language Esperanto always wanted to be.

But at what point as an artist do you choose to express yourself in a language that isn’t your mother tongue? Is it easier to sing about certain things in English?

I don’t think it’s easier. I think it’s sort of a style. Many bands think that when they sing in English they can make it everywhere. That’s not true. I think it’s a question of aesthetics. I would say the songs that are really hard to write and songs that are really about things that are hard to explain, I’ve got to write them in German. The English parts are aesthetical. When I sing in English, it’s like painting a picture, but when I sing in German it’s about singing about the subject.

You have a track on the album called “Mr. Jones and Norma Desmond.” Norma Desmond is obviously the faded Hollywood star from Billy Wilder’s movie “Sunset Boulevard,” but who is Mr. Jones?

Mr. Jones is the protagonist of a Bob Dylan song. Bob Dylan gave music critics a name. He called them Mr. Jones, and the song is about Mr. Jones today. I ask him if he has heard about Norma Desmond, because Norma Desmond for me is a figure fallen out of time but doesn’t want to accept it. Norma Desmond can’t accept that the movies have changed, and Mr. Jones can’t accept that print media is nearly dead nowadays. It’s about this inner fight.

A lot of European bands at some time or another head to Berlin. Why did you guys do it? And given that there are five of you in the band, was it difficult to make the decision to all come here together?

It would’ve been more difficult to keep the band alive in Austria. You can make it in Austria, but you’ve got to do classical music or chart music. Or folk music, like Schlager. But it’s just not possible to exist as an indie band there, and because we sing more or less in German, there weren’t really any other possibilities. We could go to Munich, but nobody wants to go to Munich because it’s too posh. We could’ve moved to Switzerland, but I don’t think that they would’ve taken us, so we’re stranded here in Berlin. It wasn’t easy, but I think it was the right time to do that because nobody had any ties to Vienna.

Last fall you were all in Cairo, Sudan and Alexandria. What were you guys doing there?

Playing concerts, just like here in Europe.

It’s not the obvious destination to go just to play concerts though!

No, well, the Goethe Institute invited us to Egypt and to Sudan, and that was really interesting. Just playing concerts there, singing German, nobody understood us and just speaking with these people. They didn’t know anything about indie music or punk. The concerts were strange too, because you could see during the first three songs they were looking and thinking, “Who are these strange white guys on the stage?”

But even I think that at a Ja, Panik concert!

(Laughs) Yes, but that’s normal for you. Europe is conquered by white thin guys looking unhealthy.

The Goethe Institute is a cultural organization, so were you just playing gigs over there or were you involved with workshops?

We did workshops in schools. That was one of the funniest experiences: being in a school with twelve-year-old children and trying to explain to them how to write a Ja, Panik song. We recorded a demo tape. That was really funny.

Your tour starts just this week. Where are you going to be playing?

Vienna, Berlin, Munich, Cologne, Hamburg, St. Gallen in Switzerland and Linz. We’re only touring for about eight or nine days. A longer tour will follow next autumn.

Atari Teenage Riot recorded on full blast old school analogue gear (tape machines, etc.) this session a few hours after their show in Austin/Texas/USA! It was like“Daytrotter???!!! Yeah let’s take the Atari and the machines and drive to the studio and DO IT!!!!” So the band brought the insane and intense live energy into the studio…

Kurt and Drop Bass don’t need an introduction!

Drop Bass Network was amongst the first labels worldwide to put out evil and dark electronic music back when it all started!

If you don’t know Drop Bass Network – check it out. The records stood the test of time – the copycats are still crying because they can simply not top those early hardcore vinyl records. They are vicious, nasty and a threat to the lies of Christianity.

The Drop Bass crew was first to introduce Digital Hardcore in 1996 in the Mid-West of America, when they put on Atari Teenage Riot and Alec Empire shows.
So what does the godfather of hardcore think about this weird and chaotic ‘re-igniton’ of ATR?
Has the group pussied out because they made an album for Steve Aoki’s Dim Mak Records and not the Beastie Boys’ label Grand Royal?

Kurt sent us his opinion on Atari Teenage Riot’s “Is This Hyperreal?”.

It hit us like the hammer of Thor!

Kurt/Drop Bass Network says :

“dude…wow! you guys hit the mark. i’m not going to say it was worth the wait…because 12 years is a long fucking time! when that blood in my eyes track came out recently i wasn’t super stoked.

i was wrong to question what atr had up it’s sleeve…this album is great.

i like this evolution…or is that revolution! cool to hear a more techno based record versus drum and bass…and all those old school rave sounds. the hyperreal title track is one of the sickest tracks i have ever heard. it’s like front 242 meets pcp/mescalinum united meets tron. i think i’m going to open dj sets with that one for a while. please say that’s a real 303 in there.

it’s cool to hear you speaking german on a record again too…adds to the intensity. and for what it’s worth one of the coolest things in rock and roll is you guys are always screaming “atari teenage riot” in your tracks….don’t even stop that. can’t wait to see you guys live this year. rave on!”
