“Like music, parfum is invisible and reaches us very deeply. It is powerful.

it triggers memories that we thought were lost forever, or it produces phantasies, ideas, creativity that we didn’t know we had.

When Illamasqua asked me to participate in the project, I immediately felt excited about it. A few hours later I was taking a flight from Tokyo to Berlin and walked quickly through the crowded duty free area at the airport. Famous brand names were screaming at me aggressively, parfum packaged and presented next to chocolate bars and whiskey bottles. I was a bit jetlagged but still awake from last night’s amazing concert. This was not a ‘job’, this was an adventure that I would remember for the rest of my life.

I noticed a family on vacation shopping, both parents were carrying plastic bags, filled with boring stuff, their son was wearing headphones playing some video game on his handheld device, didn’t seem to care about anything… and their daughter was standing a bit apart, distanced, she looked almost a bit embarassed to be there. I remembered going through this phase at that age. This is when you decide where you want to be later in life. This is when you want to get away and discover the world and your potential.

Suddenly I caught her looking at me, curious, smiling then quickly looking the other way because I noticed ….it was only a short moment, not even seconds. But I thought, wouldn’t the concept of Illamasqua’s ‘Freak’ exactly appeal to her?

Isn’t it all about who we want to be in the future? And what we do about becoming that person? Expressing ourselves is always the next step towards it.

And as an artist I know that I have the desire to always evolve further. To transform.

Many people put parfums on to ‘fit in’. Sometimes that can make sense, but isn’t it about getting noticed, isn’t it about standing out from the rest?

Aren’t those who use the term ‘freak’ in a negative way, when they point fingers at exceptional people, exactly those kinds who are just jealous of the attention the ‘freak’ draws? Don’t they find themselves copying the style of the ‘freak’ shortly after? We see it in fashion, music, science, art and make-up all the time.

I can put on any types of clothes, but the right parfum for the occasion is what stays with me, what I can sense even in the dark.  It’s so close.

I was getting ready to perform at the show the night before, the finishing touch was the parfum. My stage clothes, my make up, everything was perfect, but putting on parfum is always like when a painter signs his latest piece.

It was only minutes to show time and I could hear thousands of fans shouting my name. How I feel in that moment when I perform is what makes my performance special.

I might have sung the songs many times before, but the magic happens when I connect with the audience in that moment in time.

When I boarded the flight I thought about how Illamasqua’s “Freak” would inspire me. Their make-up did so many times before. I suddenly felt curious to find out. When I arrived in Berlin, I agreed to it.

A few weeks later I flew into London for the photoshoot, which was a really exciting experience. Many designers do a lot of work digitally, but what you see in the picture was really there on the set. I have never modelled before and as an artist I usually control my own image very carefully; the videos, the stage appearance, the photos for artwork and the media… but with Alex Box and Illamasqua I just felt it was the right thing to let go and follow their vision. I absolutely fell in love with the result!

DIM MAK CELEBRATES 15TH ANNIVERSARY WITH THE “INDIE VAULT: VOLUME 1″

Dim Mak Records is proud to announce its second installment of its vault series, “Indie Vault: Volume 1″, Out Now. With this collection, Dim Mak revisits its Indie past with artists like Klaxons, Bloc Party, Whitey, Mystery Jets, The Rakes and many more.

Dim Mak’s founder, Steve Aoki kicked started much of the Indie revolution by exposing audiences to the musical talents of Bloc Party, Klaxons and The Kills on his thriving label and DJ sets. All 19 tracks were hand selected by Steve Aoki to recount and honor Dim Mak’s history as a pioneer of music.

The array of artists on the vault have all contributed to Dim Mak Records’ innovative reputation and still continue the legacy. Recently, URB premièred Steve Aoki’s remix of Klaxons “Echoes”, first single from album ‘Surfing the Void’. Versatile singer Ali Love, notably known for his vocals on The Chemical Brothers “Do It Again”, recently signed to Dim Mak Records for an upcoming 2011 release. UK based outfit Scanners’ current album ‘Submarine’ fulfilled a promise of wonderfully crafted, sexy songs, which were featured on hit shows like ‘Gossip Girl’, ‘So, You Think You Can Dance?’ & Showtime’s ‘The Big C’. Reflecting to 2005, Bloc Party set ablaze to indie guitar bands with their solid, intelligent album ‘Silent Alarm’ featuring energetic single “Banquet”.

The complete Vault Series is a retrospective on all Dim Mak releases from 1996 to present day. Dim Mak Records celebrated its 15th Anniversary with Dim Mak Vault Series “Hardcore Vault: Volume 1″, out now. Steve Aoki narrated a teaser mixtape showcasing the thrashing music and history of Dim Mak’s hardcore artists.

This was released last Autumn at a time when all labels throw Christmas releases at everyone.

So the chance you might have missed out on this is very high, especially when you stayed away from the music media during that time.

Many tried to avoid during the recession to get manipulated into buying something they don’t need.

That’s the right attitude and we support that. (One reason why we stayed under the radar towards the end of the year.)

So we checked if this survived the past months and is still as good as it felt in the first place.

“Minimal Wave: both a genre of underground DIY electronic music from North America and Europe in the late 1970s and 80s, and the name of the label devoted to unearthing these recordings. The Minimal Wave Tapes is the first official anthology (on CD, LP and digital) of Minimal Wave music from this label. Most of the songs were originally released on limited edition cassettes or vinyl by the artists themselves, and only a handful of people knew about them. They’ve been remastered from their analog source tapes and compiled here by Minimal Wave’s Veronica Vasicka and Stones Throw’s Peanut Butter Wolf.

The Minimal Wave musical genre was hallmarked by the use of the analog synths and drum machines manufactured in the 70s and 80s, and characterized by simple music structures made by musicians working in the early D.I.Y. asthetic: recording on tape in their home studios, creating their own album artwork, and often collaborating via postage mail. The fanzine CLEM (Contact List Of Electronic Musicians) was very influential in creating a worldwide community for this sort of music, before digital technology and the internet came into play.

Minimal Wave the label was founded in New York City in 2005 by Veronika Vasicka, who focused the label solely on obscure Minimal Wave recordings, remastering and releasing them on limited vinyl and digital.

The Minimal Waves Tapes fits neatly into Stones Throw Records’ own tradition of compiling or reissuing the independent music of the past which influences the independent music we make today – 60s funk (The Funky 16 Corners), early 80s hip-hop (The Third Unheard) and West Coast Electro/Rap (Arabian Prince’s Innovative Life) to name a few.”

As the title suggests, Motor’s new album?‘HYPER MACHINE’ is abrasive metallic music, combining tough techno beats and raw rock riffs, underscored by “relentless mechanical grooves that spit blood” (as Bryan Black puts it.)

All ten new album tracks retain Motor’s trademark industrial/ rock elements previously showcased on albums Klunk and Unhuman, though this time round the emphasis is firmly on the dance-floor.

“We wanted it to carry on the spirit of those first two records, but at the same time we had to break new ground and we knew after producing just a few rough demos that the new record was going to be seriously raw and off the wall,” says Bryan, “We wanted to get back into the clubs with a fresh sound.”

Trying to summarise Mark Reeder’s career isn’t an easy task and listing his achievements almost sounds like you’re making it up. Born in Manchester, Mark moved to Berlin in 1978 and initially worked as the Germany rep for Factory Records. He went on to co-manage all-girl outfit Malaria!, took on sound engineer duties for Die Toten Hosen, toured with his band Shark Vegas as support for New Order and started the first electronic dance music label in former East Berlin. He even found time to produce the last ever pop record released in East Germany (Torture by Die Vision), show John Peel around Berlin for his Travels With My Camera documentary and discover superstar DJ Paul van Dyk. With such an enviable list of credentials to his name it’s little wonder that a recent Smirnoff Wall of Sound film described him as the ‘Godfather of the Berlin music scene’. Yet despite his impressive CV Mark has never released his own solo album…until now. Teaming up with German trance outfit Blank & Jones, Mark took a selection of their more traditional ‘songs’ and set about re-working them into a concept LP. But if you thought that what came out ‘ entitled Reordered ‘ was just another remix record then you’d be wrong as the man himself recently told Eat Your Heart Out.

Hi Mark. So just to set the record straight, Reordered isn?t technically a remix album is it?

MarkReordered could probably best be described as a re-works album as I’ve taken each track and basically rewritten and reworked the music and added my own sound imprint. It was decided to make it in a style reminiscent of the 80′s and I produced it in exactly the same way as I had made music back then; using very few instruments, real synths and guitars. I wanted Reordered to have a different sound to anything Blank & Jones had done before and to touch territory they wouldn’t normally visit.

Blank & Jones are best known for working with trance music but you’ve been able to create something completely different with Reordered. How was this?

It was the fact they had made tracks with vocals. Their original versions worked within the concept of their album and although they have vocals they’re not really songs in the traditional sense. I decided it would be a nice challenge to rewrite them and turn them into songs. They were heavily inspired by 80′s music such as Joy Division, New Order and The Cure and that’s why some of these people featured on the album in the first place. I thought it would be nice to make their tracks in a traditional 80′s style for all the people who miss the sound of those times. This style actually gave me much more scope to be creative as I was making songs again rather than DJ-friendly tracks. This retro approach was quite refreshing.

Which are your personal favourites?

I’m happy with the way A Forest turned out. It’s such an iconic track and I knew I would never be able to better the original. I knew it was going to be a very difficult one to do so it was the last track I tackled. It was a fantastic feeling being able to work with Robert Smith’s enigmatic voice. My version has roughly the same arrangement as the original but I slowed it down to half speed, added a deep buzzing synth, chuggy bass guitar and a twangy fender and tried to retain its dark, mysterious atmosphere. I had to replay absolutely everything you hear in the track, even down to creating the sound effects at the start, using real branches and local ambience.

B+J have a lot of guest artists on this record; Anne Clark, Bernard Sumner and Robert Smith to name a handful. That can often come across as being more of an opportunity to show off your celeb mates rather than actually adding anything to the music. What do you think?

I think Blank & Jones liked the idea of recording tracks with their teenage idols and in turn bringing them to a new audience. Although there are a few really famous names on the album there are also some fairly unknown ones too. It’s quite balanced.

As someone who has been working in music longer than most why’s it taken you so long to get your first LP out?

I got a bit sidetracked along the way! I made a couple of singles and EPs during the 1980s with my bands Die Unbekannten and Shark Vegas and I produced an album in East Berlin just before the Wall came down. After that I started my label MFS and I put all my energy and creativity into that, launching artists such as Paul van Dyk, Cosmic Baby and Corvin Dalek. In reality this also isn’t my own album either as it’s a collaboration with Blank & Jones, Micha Adam and myself.

So, any more collaborations or new material expected from you soon?

I’ve been working on a number of remixes including one of I’m in Love with a German Film Star by Pet Shop Boys and Sam Taylor-Wood for Kompakt plus mixes for Anne Clark, Noblesse Oblige and Die Toten Hosen. I’ve just started work on a new track together with Fidelity Kastrow and Manchester-based band Spartak and recently co-wrote a track with Bernard Sumner for his Bad Lieutenant album.

Commemorating 20 years since the fall of the Wall, 2009 is an important year for Berlin. You were there when techno became the soundtrack to a united city. What was the significance of techno during these changes?

Techno was a fledgling niche fuelled by a handful of fans in West Berlin. When the Wall came down it became the sound the Eastie kids all wanted to dance to. It was futuristic and revolutionary. Techno wasn’t song based. There were no difficult-to-understand English lyrics and the music didn’t adhere to the conventional rules of blues and rock ‘n’ roll. After years of being force fed Party-approved music, the Eastie kids finally found the release they had always yearned for. They could let their creativity run amok and there were no rules to stop them.

Do you still find Berlin an inspiring place to work after having lived here for so long?

Absolutely! It’s obviously changed over the past 20 years but that’s a good thing. The influx of new and creative people is quite exciting. I miss certain aspects of the Berlin of the past but all things considered I wouldn’t change it for anything. I feel very lucky to have had the opportunity to experience a desperate and isolated Berlin with a wall around it. Berlin today is a much more relaxed place to be. I’m addicted to its atmosphere. It’s as close to paradise as I can get!

GODLY GROOVES

Sunday; the Sabbath, the day of rest, the Lord’s day.

Whatever you want to call it, it was on the first Sunday ever that God finally kicked back, brewed up an Ovaltine and took a break from six entire days of slaving away laying the groundwork for the unadulterated shit storm the world would soon turn into. It could be argued that given the way things have turned out, God did a bit of a cack-handed job with the whole creation of the world thing.

For a start, Adam would surely just have spent his days fishing and masturbating in the Garden of Eden if God hadn’t created Eve. And surely the snake was a mistake.

Just my opinion of course; my experiences of world planning are limited to say the least and given that I only have one planet to compare notes against I can hardly lay claim to being an expert. Basically, if we want to lay the blame for the world’s problems at anyone’s door it should be at God’s since he (allegedly!) started the whole show and things seemed to go pear-shaped the minute Eve showed her face. So God and his planet building; nice ideas exectuted in record time but fatally flawed nonetheless.

Anyway, back to Sundays. That grating, dull thud at the back of your head on a Sunday morning is not the effects of too much soda water down the disco or a teenage guilt-niggle forcing your brain out of your nose because you slowdanced with someone else’s girlfriend. That itchy, nauseous, white-noise-in-your-head feeling you’re experiencing is actually your conscience telling you you’ve been much, much worse.

You see, in much the same way the Eve was way back when, you’ve perhaps unwittingly also been seduced by the snake. In a figurative sense of course. That slithering, hypnotic, fork-tongued little cretin has managed to insinuate itself way into your heart, curl up there and is slowly squeezing out any sense of right or wrong when it comes to matters of the dancefloor. It’s made you lazy and convinced you that every time you swill up on cheap beer and hit the club to freak to the latest plastic happiness remix from Kitsune or some other godawful bleepy, scratchy drivel from Ed Banger that you’re having the absolute time of your life. And you fall for it every time Goddamn it! So much so that musicians are even taking the piss out of you. MSTRKRFT dropped one of the least inspiring records ever produced recently; dropped being appropriate because I can’t believe that even they like it. Just open iElectroMusicStar, click in some beats and add Clich?-Glitch-Filter and hey presto; instant second LP.

Simian Mobile Disco did more or less the same. The breathless enthusiasm of their debut album, so fresh and immediate that we all wet ourselves when we heard it, has been replaced this time around by a bunch of fat, flabby, custardy tracks which even the way too obvious celebrity mates shopping list can’t lift out of the ditch it landed in. And by Jove, if I hear one more person giggling and turning to jelly at the thought of an imminent new Klaxons LP, I might just have to start my own religious cult which encourages their ritual slaughter. With spoons. Even Digitalism don’t bother anymore. If I was the promoter of the last gig they DJd at and they turned up in crumpled white t-shirts on my shift, I’d have pulled the plug and horsewhipped them on stage until they went home and got fucking dressed properly.

So we’re in an ever decreasing circle. It’s like an yawning great black hole pulling us ? lazy musicians and undiscerning record buyers alike ? into a seething, inescapable cesspool where all we can do (apart from burn) is pull robotic moves to Pop the Glock and bore each other to death about which Maison compilation was really the best. For ever. It’s not even that we’ve been sold a lie because it was true once; it’s just no one can be bothered to admit it. It takes a bit of time and bravery to confess that the current batch of electronic music is really rather shit. You can be dancing in some club, convulsing like a spastic sat on a pylon and twenty minutes in; epiphany. It’s like the Burning Bush or the parting of the Red Sea when slowly you realise: Hey, I’ve been programmed to like this. It doesn’t speak to me. It doesn’t make me feel anything.

I’m on auto pilot here. I just don’t like this. So what do you do? Go back to Nu Rave? Indie rock? Chiptune? If those were the only choices I’d start hiding pills in my socks and start going to Donk parties.

But there is a light; a distant golden glimmer at the end of this fat, flatulent tunnel of muck. And it’s name, rather appropriately, is Godly Grooves. And my God, if this record had floated down into my room on a cloud followed by all the angels and cherubs of the heavens, I couldn’t like it more. Arok and Scientist are German DJs and have clearly been snorting inspiration because they’ve just released the strongest contender yet for Best Record of 2009. A unique and ultimately screwy mixtape of rare 60s and 70s Christian grooves, originally released on obscure, religious labels and selected, dusted down, scrubbed up and remixed into an hour long compilation. Blessed be, they’ve even put it out on a brand new imprint and limited the run of units to a mere 100. So heavenly, so unusual, you virtually lose your powers of description and can just goggle open-mouthed in wonder at how someone could have come up with a record which on the surface of it sounds monstrous but which in reality is the nearest thing we’ve heard this year to perfection. Religious music is usually whack and about as much fun as a day doing door-to-door with the Jehovah’s Witnesses.

This is different; bizarre, crackly Christian tracks sung in German over lo-fi beat samples, fat basslines and off-kilter registers. It has to be heard to be believed. And believe it you should brother. Refreshing proof that there are musicians work out there who can move the boundaries of what electronic music is all about, incorporate hitherto untouched genres and spark off something new.

So will we all be dancing to obscure Christian grooves in the near future? Unlikely. And admittedly taking it in context it probably isn’t the greatest album ever, but the fact that it’s just about the only original thing I’ve heard this year (barring Health and Robot Koch’s LP) makes it worthy of a special mention. Plus the fact that no one will like it makes it all the more attractive. click here to watch

This was filmed at C/O Pop Festival in Cologne, Germany, last night. What’s up with stage managers just taking the power to cut an artist short during a performance? People pay money to see the musicians, not to get in sync with stupid time tables that were planned wrong in the first place.

It’s time festivals think about MUSIC again and not sponsorship and respect all musicians who bring in the people at the end.

This is a song I did with the Iranian singer, Sussan Deyhim, which will be presented as part of the protest situation – we’re presenting it with United 4 Iran.

The poem is based on a work by the poet Rumi from several centuries ago, but it still resonates with today’s geopolitics – it’s in Farsi, but for English speakers, there will be a translation posted.

In conjunction with United 4 Iran, a group of political activists, artists, writers, and musicians have organized a global protest in conjunction with many other movements. If you have a moment, please check out the material, and organize a local event to support the people of Iran.
